The story begins in 1815 when Edmond Dantès, a young and successful merchant sailor, is falsely accused of treason by his supposed friends and sentenced to life imprisonment. While in prison, he befriends an elderly inmate, Faria, who shares with him the location of a hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo.

After Faria's death, Dantès manages to escape and finds the treasure. Using the wealth, he creates a new identity for himself as the wealthy and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo. With his newfound power and influence, Dantès sets out to seek revenge on those who wronged him, including his former friends and the corrupt officials who imprisoned him.
